Cycle Signals

How to Read Bitcoin Cycle Signals

The NHCI Score tells you where Bitcoin is in its cycle. But two contextual overlays add a layer of intelligence the raw score cannot capture: DescentGuard detects bear market descents disguised as accumulation, and InstitutionalTopRisk detects distribution from large holders before cycle tops.

Score + Direction = Signal

A key insight behind NeverHodl's signal system: the same NHCI score means different things depending on direction. A score of 50 rising from 35 (emerging from capitulation into a bull market) is very different from a score of 50 falling from 75 (correcting from a cycle top).

The raw score tells you the level. The overlays tell you the context. Together, they produce a complete cycle signal.

"A descending score in the 35–65 range looks identical to an ascending score — numerically. DescentGuard exists specifically to distinguish these two scenarios. Without it, a falling market in the 40s could be mistaken for a recovery opportunity."

Four Actionable Signals

The NHCI produces four signals based on cycle phase and overlay state:

ACCUMULATE
NHCI below 45 · DescentGuard inactive
Capitulation or recovery confirmed. Historically the highest-return entry zone. Long-term holder behavior shows accumulation. Smart money entering.
HOLD
NHCI 45–65 · No top risk signals
Bull market in progress. Risk/reward positive but upside increasingly priced in. Standard hold or dollar-cost averaging zone. No urgency to add or reduce.
CAUTION
NHCI 65–75 · OR DescentGuard active · OR InstitutionalTopRisk firing
Risk/reward deteriorating. Could be overheating or bear descent. Consider partial profit-taking. Wait for confirmation before adding exposure.
REDUCE
NHCI above 75 · NeverHodl™ zone
Multiple cycle-top indicators firing simultaneously. Historically the highest-risk zone. Reducing exposure is historically justified. The original "NeverHodl" moment.

DescentGuard: Bear Market Descent Detection

The most dangerous trap in Bitcoin cycle analysis is a falling score that looks like an entry opportunity. A score of 42 in January 2022 looked like "Accumulation" — but Bitcoin had just dropped from $69K and would continue falling to $15,600. DescentGuard was built to catch exactly this.

DESCENTGUARD

Bear Market Descent Warning

Activates when a score in the apparent accumulation range is part of an ongoing bear market descent from a recent peak. The warning reads: "Bear market descent active — score is in accumulation range but falling from recent peak. Wait for capitulation signals before accumulating."

What it detects
Active bear market descents disguised as accumulation zones
Data analyzed
Momentum, on-chain holder behavior, and market structure — proprietary combination
Deactivation
Only when multiple independent capitulation signals confirm a genuine bottom
Validated instances
Nov 2021 → Jun 2022 bear descent · Nov 2025 → Feb 2026 correction

What to do when DescentGuard is active

When DescentGuard is active, treat any score in the 35–65 range as if it were a CAUTION signal, not ACCUMULATE. The market may still be falling. Wait for the overlay to deactivate — which happens only when genuine capitulation metrics confirm a true bottom, not a temporary dip.

InstitutionalTopRisk: Cycle Top Detection

Cycle tops are rarely sudden. Large holders — long-term Bitcoin holders, miners, and institutional players — typically begin distributing weeks or months before the retail crowd recognizes the peak. InstitutionalTopRisk reads these distribution signals directly from on-chain data, independently of the main NHCI score.

INSTITUTIONALTOPROISK

Cycle Top Distribution Pattern

When this overlay fires, it can fire even when the score hasn't fully entered the NeverHodl™ zone — providing early warning. It operates independently of the main NHCI score using a proprietary pattern recognition system on on-chain data.

What it detects
On-chain distribution signatures from long-term holders and large-cap market participants
Data analyzed
On-chain holder behavior, profitability metrics, and market cap ratios — proprietary combination
Exact triggers
Proprietary — not disclosed
Track record
5/5 correct signals: Apr 2021 · Nov 2021 · Oct 2025 · Dec 2025 · Apr 2026

Reading All Signal Combinations

Here is how to interpret the full combination of NHCI score, DescentGuard state, and InstitutionalTopRisk state:

NHCI Score DescentGuard InstTopRisk Signal Interpretation
Below 35 Inactive Inactive ACCUMULATE Genuine bottom. Strongest historical entry zone. All capitulation signals confirmed.
35–45 Inactive Inactive ACCUMULATE Recovery phase. Smart money accumulating. Strong risk/reward.
35–65 Active Inactive CAUTION Bear descent active. Score looks tempting but market may be falling. Wait for capitulation confirmation.
45–65 Inactive Inactive HOLD Bull market in progress. Healthy uptrend. No major cycle risk signals yet.
45–75 Inactive Active CAUTION Distribution detected from large holders. Consider partial profit-taking even if score hasn't peaked yet.
65–75 Inactive Inactive CAUTION Overheated. Risk/reward deteriorating. Partial profit-taking appropriate.
Above 75 Inactive Any REDUCE NeverHodl™ zone. Cycle top territory. Multiple top indicators firing. Historical sell zone.

How Signals Played Out in Real Markets

APRIL 2021
InstitutionalTopRisk fires — NHCI ~78 NEVERHODL™
18 days before local top at $58,000. On-chain distribution patterns flagged by InstitutionalTopRisk. Bitcoin dropped 53% over the following 3 months.
NOVEMBER 2021
NHCI ~82 NEVERHODL™ + InstitutionalTopRisk (institutional pattern)
12 days before ATH at $69,000. LTH-SOPR above 1.35 + Thermocap above 30 flagged institutional distribution. Bitcoin lost 75% over the next 12 months.
NOVEMBER 2021 → JUNE 2022
DescentGuard activates — score in 35–55 range but falling
As NHCI fell from 82 toward 40, DescentGuard prevented false "accumulation" signals during the descent. Deactivated only in June 2022 when MVRV, Fear & Greed, and LTH-SOPR confirmed genuine capitulation.
NOVEMBER 2022
NHCI ~22 BOTTOM — DescentGuard off — ACCUMULATE signal
FTX crash bottom at $15,600. DescentGuard deactivated after capitulation confirmed. ACCUMULATE signal issued. Bitcoin gained 280% over the next 12 months.
OCTOBER 2025
InstitutionalTopRisk fires + NHCI ~76 NEVERHODL™
24 days before all-time high at $126,198 on October 26, 2025. Most advance warning of any signal. REDUCE signal issued October 2. Bitcoin peaked and corrected 30%.
NOVEMBER 2025 → FEBRUARY 2026
DescentGuard activates — score in 30–50 range but descending
As score fell from NeverHodl™ zone, DescentGuard flagged the correction phase. Prevented premature "accumulate" signals during the descent.
Q1 2026
NHCI ~28 BOTTOM — DescentGuard off — ACCUMULATE signal
Correction bottom confirmed. Capitulation metrics validated. DescentGuard deactivated. Recovery phase began. 8th correct major turning point identified.
